Install a Louvered Outdoor Dryer Vent by Yourself

One way to cut down on critters in your dryer vent is to install a louvered vent. Louvered vents open when the dryer is in use by the air coming from the duct work. When the dryer is not in use, the vent stays closed. Learn how to install a louvered outdoor dryer vent and eliminate birds and small animals from making homes in the dryer’s duct work.

  • Unplug the dryer and move it away from the wall to allow access to the vent.

  • Disconnect the inside duct work from the outside vent by unscrewing the holding clamp with a screwdriver.

  • Go outside and remove the four screws that attach the outside dryer vent to the house.

  • Using a putty knife to separate the old caulk from the dryer vent, pull the vent out of the wall. Clean the outside area of the hole, removing any old caulk and other debris.

  • Insert the louvered vent tube into the wall and firmly set the vent against the house. Using four rust-resistant screws, attach the louvered vent to the wall.

  • Run a small bead of caulk between the new vent and the wall.

  • Go inside and reattach the duct work to the outside vent with the clamp.

  • Plug the dryer into the wall outlet and push it back into position.
