DIY Replace a Baseboard Diffuser

A baseboard diffuser is found in homes that have duct openings along the bottom of walls or the edges of floors. They allow air to pass through to heat or cool a room. Due to their location, these diffusers can become damaged. When enough wear and tear has occurred, these diffusers need to be replaced. Replacing a baseboard diffuser is important to ensure you are getting the proper air flow in your home.

Turn off the heating or cooling system so air is not blowing out when the diffuser is being replaced. Locate all of the screws on the baseboard diffuser and remove them with a screwdriver. Set them aside for future use.

Slide a putty knife between the diffuser and the wall to remove any caulking that might be holding the diffuser in place. Scrape away the excess caulk and carefully pull the old diffuser away from the wall.

Measure the size of the old diffuser so the new baseboard diffuser is the proper size. Set it up into the opening to verify that it fits properly. Insert the same screws that were used for the old diffuser into the holes and tighten them down about halfway.

Run a bead of silicone sealant along the sides of the opening. Press the diffuser down against the sealant to secure it to the wall. Tighten down the screws until they are securely in place.

Turn the power back on to the unit and check to make sure air is circulating through the diffuser.
